My notebook is fixed...........

Ministry Partners,

June 1 --- Today is Alfred’s final day at work before he begins his vacation, 25 days of ministry!
I awoke at 6:15 to a beautiful sunny Rwandan day, having breakfast at 7. I decide to not have the omelet breakfast but opted for a bowl of my granola and Rwandan tea.
The same team doing water wells is also here and two of the young men agreed to take a look at my computer. It turned on but after they left it stopped working again. I am thankful Alfred left his computer for me to use.
Pastor Wilson arrived at 8:30 and the excitement he demonstrated, verbally giving God praise, for the arrival of the crusade posters and handouts made my heart smile. We had a good visit talking about different scriptures as we waited for Pastor Peter to arrive. Pastor Wilson does well at English but there are times Pastor Peter’s translation is also helpful for him but especially for me to understand.
After Pastor Peter’s arrival we went over the agenda for the crusade and I asked for his input but he said he liked the agenda as presented. I gave him the needed funds for the rental of chairs and a sound system as well as funds for the construction of a speaker’s platform. He was extremely happy when I told him he could have the platform for the front of his church after the crusade. We had a great discussion about Rwandan cultural issues, I am still learning so much.
Pastor Peter is having trouble with his phone so we are going to the Commissioner General’s office to find out about the approval letter and to stop by Alfred’s office as he called and said he needed his computer. I am going to take my computer with me and find out from Alfred where to take it to find out what is wrong with it.
Alfred looked very “smart” in his new shirt, a gift from the friends at church. It was so fun to be introduced to every work associate of Alfred’s as he got teased by his co-workers and me. He has been promoted much and it is evident that he is very well thought of.
Then Pastor Peter and I were off to town but as it was lunch time I invited him to lunch at our favorite buffet place. We were there early so we were able to sit outside, usually the seating outside is already taken. The food is/was excellent and the cost is surprisingly reasonable for the large variety of items only $5. We had a great lunch finished off  with wonderful pineapple. For those who know me, it is my favorite at every meal if I can get it. We had a great visit about his work and the church that he holds at the IRM office property along with his family and children, two of his sons are at university now.
Then we were off to get Pastor Peter’s phone fixed. We walked down a dirt ally, between buildings to a back room type of shop, the size of a small walk-in closet. A tiny cluttered work shelf and 2 chairs filled up the space. I sat in one chair while the repairman sat on the edge of his work shelf. He left at one point to get a part but when he was putting it in he discovered it had gum on it. It was evident that this new part was used so he left again to get a new one.
The room was so tiny and with the heat, the room became stifling but I was concerned about offending this repairman who had been so gracious as to offer me his “office” chair. I chose not to wait outside and was pleased that the repairs did not last more than the hour and thirty minutes that we were there. I observed that he appeared to be knowledgeable about his craft and was glad when the repairs were done.  Curious Rwandan men heard about the Muzungu (white person) who was at the repair shop and came to peek in the door just to check. I would have liked a photo of the repairman and his shop.
Pastor Peter asked if there was anything else we needed in town and as we were also in the area of clothing I told him about the dress I had seen at the airport in Nairobi and wondered if we could find out if that type was available locally. We found one shop and although I did not see the dress I was looking for I did see one Rwandan style 3 piece outfit that I liked and I bought it.
I thanked Pastor Peter for waiting while I picked one out and he said “Why not, you waited patiently for a long time while my phone was being repaired”. He procured a taxi at a good rate as he had me wait down the street so we could be out of the city center area before the 5 o’clock rush. Costs for just about everything here is more when they see a Muzungu. The taxi dropped me off at Moucecore and then took Pastor Peter home to spend time with his family.
I tried on my new Rwandan 2 piece dress on and took the headpiece to one of the office girls here and asked her to put it on her head to show me how to do it. She smiled and laughed but readily showed me how. Then I went to my room and put the fabric on my own head and went back to show her and the other young woman.  I got resounding approval for the outfit and how I had done the headpiece. They said I was very very “smart” and that other Rwandans would highly approve. I could not help but laugh with then for I had bought the outfit to wear at home when I do my presentations or other times when I will be sharing about Rwanda.
Alfred arrived about 6pm for a dinner of Tilapia, macaroni w/sauce, beans, chips and a fresh carrot/tomato/avocado (my first fresh item to eat at this guesthouse and I will not do that again) with oranges for desert.
The teck/ICT technician person that does all the computer work for Alfred’s workplace was busy working on computers at a bank but he was going to come to Moucecore to check out my computer. He came straight from the bank and arrived at 9:15. Not good news…….it appears that the sales person at the electronics shop at the airport in Amsterdam did not sell me the correct cord. Although it allowed me to initially use the commuter, my notebook uses 12 volts and the power cable he sold me was 19 volts.
He decided to take my notebook with him to see if he could make the necessary repairs and Alfred left me his computer so I could get this journaling done. I wanted to get this Word doc. Copied and pasted into the blog but the internet is not strong enough tonight. Hopefully, it will be tomorrow.
Enough work for today. Its midnight and time for me to go to bed.
June 2 --- I slept lat this morning, until 7:30. I guess my body knew breakfast was scheduled for 8, my clock is working but not the alarm.
Alfred’s wife, Blessing, is arriving today, a 10 hr. bus ride, at 10 for the weekend. She and their 3 children are current in Uganda as she is going to the university there to get her Master’s Degree like Alfred did. Blessing fits her name and she is just that, God has blessed Alfred by giving her to him for a wife. It will be so good to see her.
It is noon and they are about to arrive for lunch then Blessing will translate for me during my time with the 60 HIV/AIDS ladies at the office.
What a blessing it was to be with the ladies at the IRM office today. I shared about how/when God called me to preach the Gospel in the prisons and walking in obedience ever when I had fear. Then I shared some of my personal testimony followed by making the choice to forgive those that hurt us and that releasing to Jesus the bitterness and resentment we feel towards them then brings joy and peace into our lives.
I knew the Holy Spirit had already prepared the soil of their hearts as 6 received God’s free gift of salvation and one rededicated her life sharing about how my message about forgiveness had ministered to her because until today she had not been able to make the choice to forgive. Thank you Lord for each one of these precious ladies and may you pour out your blessings upon them.
There were some interesting questions concerning forgiveness before we closed with prayer and then Alfred took a number of group photos and candid shots. The ladies had a hard time leaving…………we just ran out of time. We were only supposed to be with them until 4:30 but it was almost 6 when we finally drove away in our taxi.
Dinner was ready when we arrived back at Moucecore and after dinner we watched Courageous. Alfred and Blessing gave a big thank you to Skip and Nancy for the DVD. They will share it in couple’s ministry here.
Once again it is midnight and time for bed. The electricity went out about 1 ½ hours ago and the computer battery is running low.
June 3 --- Sunday morning in Rwanda, a very good day to worship and praise the Lord.
After a breakfast of French toast, pineapple and Rwandan tea Alfred and Blessing arrived to take me to Pastor Jerome’s village church. I first met Pastor Jerome last year and he wanted to give me his testimony. He said he had been a prisoner at the 1930 Central Prison when I did a crusade there and in 2010 he took the IRM Spiritual Leaders Training. When he was released he started studying with Pastor Peter, from the Rwandan Foursquare Church, who was one of the local follow-up pastors that was also involved in the training. He now has his own Foursquare Church and he has a heart for working with IRM, returning to the prisons to give his testimony and to share the Gospel.
He met us at the roadside and he was quite an elegant sight in his white trousers and white calf length coat.
We walked with up the hill on a dirt pathway only a short distance when we heard the beautiful singing coming from his small church. We had arrived a bit late as they had started at 10. After they finished that song Pastor Jerome introduced us stating how he first heard me preach in the prisons and that I was his Spiritual Mother. I was the first time I had ever heard myself referred to that way in a public setting.
It was a blessing of realization that brought tears to my eyes, the Lord has brought me so far and blessed my life beyond measure.
Choirs sang both young and older, then there were testimonies. My watch said 10 min. to 12 when Pastor Jerome stood and said a few words and motioned to the man sitting behind me who was sitting next to the wall. As Alfred, Blessing and I turned to look….. I watched the man stand up and remove the wall clock that was hanging there!!!!!!!!!!!! We just couldn’t help it, we started laughing out loud as did the other parishioners. I figured Pastor Jerome was preparing to preach a very long sermon.
Then he handed the mike to me and one to Alfred. I looked at Alfred with a puzzled look as he said “Your turn to preach”! To which I commented, “Oh, I thought I was going to hear Pastor Jerome preach”. I asked Pastor Jerome how long I had to preach and he said, “I’ve removed the clock, no matter.”
I preached about “Making Choices out of Fear”, included some of my personal testimony, some about holding on to bitterness and resentment and some about the beginnings of prison ministry and IRM. I quoted Eph.2:8.9 followed by Blessing, Alfred and I doing the “Gift Bag” skit. I gave the invitation while Alfred sang a song of invitation and then we watched the Holy Spirit bring 9 to saving knowledge in Jesus Christ.
Pastor Jerome prayed over them and I had the privilege of leading them in a prayer of salvation.
Then Pastor Jerome asked me if I was coming again or did I want to hear him preach then. I said “You took the clock off the wall, go ahead.” And that is what he did for about 20 min.. By the time we had finished it was 1:30. Everyone was so gracious and allowed us to take photos and one woman introduced herself as also having the name Arlene.
Then Pastor Jerome asked that we stop by his nearby house before departing and of course it would have been rude to have refused……..little did we know that for this Muzungu it was quite far and uphill.
When we finally arrived at his house it appeared many of the people from the church were also invited and then, according to Rwandan custom, it became evident that we had actually been invited to dinner.
How gracious of Pastor Jerome and his wife to host such an event in my honor. The meal was delicious, especially the rice. In all my visits to Rwanda I had never eaten rice flavored in that manner, I had to restrain myself from eating more than my very generous portion.
After eating we thanked Jerome and his wife and made our way down the hill to our taxi and back to Moucecore. It was hard to see Blessing leave for Uganda at 5 but she need to get back for University studied and work tomorrow.
Alfred and I had dinner at 7 and the worked on IRM business stuff. I finally “kicked him out” at about 9 as we will have a very early and busy day tomorrow.
I have worked on this computer for 11/2 hours and I have been promised that my computer will be fixed and back to me tomorrow ….. I really hope so. The plan was to post at least every other day but this is apt to turn into a novel if I don’t get it back soon. We have no idea why Alfred’s computer will not let me get into my Gmail account or why the blog will not allow me access. Neither will accept my passwords…….hummmm.
It’s very late now so I’m off to bed.

That none would be lost,
Arlene

Arlene;s Flight Travels..........

Ministry Partners,

Sorry I have not been able to keep you updated since my last post as I would have liked. Not sure quite where to begin but I will try to do my best on this computer borrowed from Alfred, the story about my computer to follow later.
May 30th. ---I thought that after spending 10 hours in the Amsterdam airport terminal and having my boarding pass in hand I would be good to go. With only getting 1to 1½ hrs sleep in 2 days I was looking forward to the long flight to Kigali so I could get some sleep.
But as I arrived at the gate I was told that I had not been given the correct boarding pass and needed to wait until I could obtain another one. In addition they told me they could not issue me a boarding pass for the Nairobi to Kigali flight and that I would have wait to obtain one from the Transfer Station in that airport.
On earlier flights I have had to use that Transfer Station and I must admit I was not looking forward to that very real possibility. In the past some people would be waiting patiently in line for their turn while others seemingly oblivious to the designated line, would be pushing and shoving in the front of the line so they could be first and not have to wait. Yet, for sure, there was no use worrying about it and borrowing trouble from tomorrow, today was having enough challenges of its own.
To say I was grateful and excited to finally get seated on the plane is an understatement. Again, God was caring for and providing for me before I even asked as there was an empty seat beside me where I could actually lay down, get the pressure off of my hip and get some much needed sleep.
The person in a neighboring seat was a pastor from Kenya. We had a nice visit, ending with him asking me “When are you coming to Kenya for a crusade?” I told him if God ever called me to Kenya I would certainly contact the number he had given me and let him know.
May 31st. ---When I arrived in Nairobi God’s faithfulness was evident as the young man providing my wheelchair assistance did a marvelous job when he took me to the airport Transfer Station. He took my passport and other papers to the Transfer desk after placing me (in my wheelchair) a few feet away.
In that “sea of people” he disappeared for about 15 minutes emerging with my passport and much needed boarding pass in hand. He then pushed my chair/me to the departure gate and assisted me and my carry-ons through security. I was ever so pleased to give him a Gospel tract and $5. His broad smile told me he appreciated the fact that I recognized his job very well done!
I waited about 1½ hours until boarding time and I was ever so pleased to once again find an empty seat beside me so I could elevate my feet. I was actually looking at my watch and counting the 1 hour and 15 minutes until the plane would touch down in Kigali and I would see Alfred’s and Pastor Peter’s smiling faces greeting me when………we were not allowed to depart and 4 airport staff boarded the plane.
Everyone’s boarding passes were checked again…….then again…….then again a 3rd time. After sitting on the tarmac for an hour and 20 min. we were informed of the issue. There were more passengers on the plane than there were suppose to be, more than were on the manifest. They were trying to determine who the extra people were and why they were on the plane. Having finally made that determination they gave the approval for us to leave.
I can never explain just how happy I was to finally feel/hear the plane wheels touch down on Rwandan soil. But my “days of days” was not yet over. I had filled out my country entrance card on the plane and went through the airport checkpoint quickly and found a young attendant, with a cart, to lift my luggage. As I waited for my luggage to appear I stepped briefly to an area where I could see past the guards and there was Alfred waving his arms and Pastor Peter…….goodness it was good to see familiar faces !!!!!!!
Then I turned back to watch for my luggage and finally, there it came. Did you notice I said “it”? Yep, only one made it but I must admit after the past few days I was surprised that one made it. Hummm, perhaps God is still working on that “patience” lesson with me. Nevertheless, I saw God’s gracious hand in even this as the suitcase that made it was the one with my cloths.
After spending over 30 minutes with a nice young woman in an office, just off the luggage area, giving her more information than a high school exam, she said they would began a trace to find out which leg of the trip that the luggage got lost. I gave her Alfred’s phone number as well as the guest house where I am staying. She advised me to call tonight at around 8 and see if they had been able to trace the location of the suitcases. It was about 11am by the time we left the airport and headed for Moucecore guest house.
I took a few minutes to freshen up before I met with Pastor Wilson. I could see the disappointment in his face when I told him that I did not have the crusade posters and handouts I had brought for him as they were in the lost luggage. Alfred told him that he was going to call the airport at 8pm to see if the suitcases had arrived and we would then call him and let him know the status.
After changing into my “professional business” outfit (advised by Rwandan culture and Alfred), Alfred, Pastor Peter and I headed off for the meeting with Paul, the Commissioner General of Rwanda Correction Services. I was so thankful that Alfred was able to get the scheduled morning appointment changed to 3pm.
It did not take long for the three of us to see that God had gone before us as I was finding great favor with the Major General Paul Rwarakabije and with the Director General of Planning Rwanda Correction Services, Mr. Emmanuel Rukundo, who is actually the 3rd in command. I could see that the General would be someone you would NOT want to get on the wrong side of.
Alfred asked me to share about how God first called me to do ministry in the prisons, the work we have been doing and my heart for prison ministry in general. When I first started to talk the General took out a notebook and began taking notes on the things I was sharing. After my first few sentences his face softened and he began to smile. I was so thankful for the words and courage the Holy Spirit gave me as at one point I shared the Gospel with them. It was such a huge opportunity to use what I share with the prisoners as an avenue to also share with them.
Everyone had been praying about this meeting and that I would find favor with the General as it is import for him to look favorably on the work IRM is doing in the prisons.
At one point, when I shared about the impact IRM is having with the Spiritual Leaders using Pastor Jerome and Pastor Cornelius as examples, Emmanuel asked if we would consider having the released leaders form an association so they would return to the prisons for ministry, sharing their testimony of how IRM had ministered to them and where their lives are today. It would be an association were these leaders could help and encourage each other in their daily lives and in ministry. All of us “saw” God open another door for IRM!!!!!!!!!!!!
We were asking God for favor of 100% and we find that God has exceeded our request as we all felt I had received 1000%. Once again I can give God praise for His leading and this God given opportunity.
I do not run my life on feelings but on the truth of God’s word but Alfred, Pastor Peter and I all commented on how the presence of God during the meeting was so evident and felt by all three of us. So much so that after we left the General’s office we found it hard to put into words what we saw God do in the meeting, a meeting which the General seemed to not want to end. It was a very long meeting and as we left the General’s office he made it very clear that he wanted me to come again as he extended another invitation.
Pastor Peter is to call the Generals office tomorrow and see if the signed approval papers are ready.
Alfred was contacted by the airport saying that both pieces of my lost luggage had arrived and was ready to be picked up. Thank you God, for answering our prayer with a “yes” and so very quickly.
One the way to the airport we picked up Alexis who is a Bishop in the local ministry that partners with the United Christian Church in America.  Because we are not yet registered with the government he partnered with us for the current application to do prison ministry.  At one time he was also a prisoner, falsely accused and at trial found innocent. He had dinner with us and he shared his story making it clear that he has a heart to serve in the prisons, partnered with IRM.
Alexis left after dinner and Alfred, Pastor Peter and I had a meeting to outline the agenda for the crusade so that we can share it with Pastor Wilson, our host pastor for the village crusade, tomorrow. We decided to call it a day at 10pm.
Goodness, today, my first day in Rwanda, has been a very busy, exciting and fruitful day, a day to give God much praise for. It has been a day designed by God own hand for sure. After unpacking the suitcases, doing a bit of long hand journaling, for some reason my computer was not working, its 11:30 pm and time for bed and I was so ready.

God had different plans........

Ministry Partners,
I am not sure when I will get this posted but I just had to let you know how yesterday and today has gone…….QUITE different that what was planned.
All went well at PDX although I was told to go to the Delta counter when in fact I needed to go to the Alaska counter. But God provided a kind Delta employee who gathered my 3 bags onto a cart which he pushed to the appropriate counter.
The flight to Los Angeles went well but upon arrival those traveling to Amsterdam were told that the fright had been delayed by 2 hours and I would not make my connecting flight to Rwanda as planned. I waited at the gate but no one came to man the counter until 30 min. before the new flight time of 4pm.
At 4:15 everyone was boarded and the agent at the door was saying “last call, we need to get in the air” to which I responded “Not without me I need to be on that plane!” The attendant behind the counter had been working all that time trying to get me booked on another flight and had taken the current boarding pass that I originally had.
There was another young man waiting behind me that was also waiting to get rescheduled to Entebi (?sp.). I told him that I thought God was trying to work on my character concerning patience and we both laughed.
I explained to the counter person about the need for me to get to Rwanda for an important meeting with government officials and that I would take any flight or airline that would do that. While I was waiting I remembered praying with Shelly before I left thanking God that I knew He was in control and for going before me and after me. I kept reminding myself of God’s faithfulness, that I would see Him implement His perfect plan….for me and for that important meeting and Amsterdam to Rwanda flight.
Finally, I had my boarding pass in hand along with the paperwork for my Amsterdam to Kigali (by way of Nairobi, Kenya) flight after a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam. But it was not until I arrived in Amsterdam and went to the KLM transfer station that the lady actually gave me my boarding pass and I realized what God had actually provided.
Although I was routed to Kenya with a 2 hr. layover I would arrive Thursday morning at 9am instead of 8pm if I had stayed with the direct one flight a day.
It is now 3pm in Amsterdam and I am exhausted and weary but giving God praise and thanking him AGAIN for his provision and faithfulness. I have not had to wait until I arrived in Rwanda to see God do great things……He is doing them now. I am so thankful too for the KLM agent in L.A. who worked so hard to find a flight that would get me to Kigali before the scheduled meeting.
A nice young man in a electronic store here where I needed to buy a computer cord let me use his phone to call Alfred so he would know my new arrival time in Kigali tomorrow morning AND he is letting me use the store internet feed to get this posted. Another blessing and provision from the Lord's hand!!!
I appreciate your continued prayers.
Giving God praise and thanks,
Arlene

Departure day has finally arrived.............

Ministry Partners,

Although each of us is called to be a missionary in our local community, this missionary is thankful for God's direction and provision for this opportunity in Rwanda.

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"   Isaiah 61:1

I appreciate team member Shelly Brown who will pick me up at 5:45 this morning to take me to the airport and then stay to help me when we get there. It's so nice to have her help me and help with the extra luggage, with my carry-on that makes 4 pieces.

I fly from PDX to Los Angeles to Amsterdam and then to Rwanda, arriving there tomorrow evening.

Getting on the internet is sometimes questionable as it is down and often weak but I will try and post as often as I can.

Rwanda...........

Bye for now...............

1 day to go...............

Ministry Partners,
My day of departure for Rwanda is almost here......tomorrow.
This morning as I chatted with Alfred in Rwanda it appears I am not the only one who is excited as he and our wonderful staff there are also excited for our ministry time together.

I am blessed for sure to be an Ambassador for Jesus Christ

Thank you for your prayers concerning the scheduling for an appointment time for me to meet with the Commissioner General of Prisons. The day we requested, May 31, has been approved and set for a face to face meeting. Thank you Jesus! Continue to pray that I would find favor with those I meet with according to God's perfect will in all of this and that I would be an Ambassador worthy of my calling because of the strength, courage and wisdom available to me from the Holy Spirit.

I must again say thank you to each one who prayed and gave sacrificially to the "Bibles for Rwanda Project". Because of your generous financial gifts I was able to order 4,000 Kinyarwanda Bibles. I will go to the printers when I get in Kigali and order the Discipleship Booklets that are needed to go with them.
I know each "set" will be a treasured gift as each receipt will be able to grow in their faith.

Last minute packing and printing of the last papers I need to put in my briefcase will take up today's time and I appreciate my neighbor, Norma, inviting me to dinner so I do not have to cook tonight.

Thank you again for your continuing prayers for all aspects for this ministry, our trip and especially for good soil for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

That none would be lost,
Arlene

6 days and counting........

Ministry Partners,
It's hard to believe that the time for my departure to Rwanda for the 9th time is only six days away. Everyone on both sides of the "pond" has been very busy getting final plans and details down on paper.

My trip to the Klamath Falls area went well, thank you for your prayers and 'Thank You" to Malin Baptist Church, United Family Fellowship, Bible Baptist and Klamath Christian Center. I spent the evening of my 68th birthday at Klamath Christian Center, sharing my testimony with about 80 senior High School/College students. What a wonderful group of young people and God gave me a special birthday gift as I watched Him add 7 to the Lambs Book of Life........birthday presents don't get much better than that!!!

There were so many people that did special events that contributed to the "Bibles for Rwanda" project as well as general help for the team. The problem with thanking specific people is that I am sure to leave too many out so please forgive me. But I must thank a group of young girls (Mom's too) who for a second year held a yard sale for the Bible Project.

I am sorry that not all the girls were available for this photo.
What a blessing it is to see these girls work so hard to raise funds for Bibles, understanding the importance of someone they will never meet having God's Word. Then there was Olive Photography and.... and.... and.... and the person who sacrificed to purchase 1 Bible/Discipleship Booklet set, "THANK YOU" to each one. I wish I had the words to convey what a huge blessing each Bible is.

TIG Prisoners celebrate at having a copy of God's Word

I learned last Sat. that the government is "holding" the signature of approval for our Prison Ministry application until they can have a face to face meeting with me. I am so pleased, and see God's direction in this, that the Commissioner General of Prisons has requested a personal meeting. Please pray that IRM would find favor in all of the meetings I will have with those in government positions including wardens, as well as God given opportunities with villagers, ect., ect.......

Yesterday, following our last U.S. team meeting, I handed off 4 team suitcases, packed and weighed, 49# each, to team members Pastor Al & Kathy Carpenter and Pastor Shelly Brown. Now it is time to get the final preparation and packing done at my house, Tuesday morning will be here....SOON.

Thank You for your continued prayer and support. Remember there is still time......
