Ministry Partners and Friends,

We just wanted to take a moment to wish you a very happy holiday season as you celebrate the birth of our precious Savior, God's gift to us.

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Matt.1:23

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Luke 1:31-33

God, through his angel, tells us that wrapped in Christmas is good news of such great joy that, if we believe it, we won’t be able to contain the celebration within us.
God’s good news is so much more than our circumstances! The joy of Christmas is based on the truth that God loves us, God is with us, and God is for us. So, indeed it is time to celebrate with family, friends and those we meet.

Sharing the Gospel Message, tracts and scarves

It's hard to believe I have been home for 3 weeks. I miss Rwanda so very much but as I look through the photos from the trip I am reminded of the powerful work of God that the team saw Him do there. We all followed suit as Steve would say every day, many times a day, "WOW".

We were not approved to enter two of the prisons that we had applied for due to reconstruction we were told but God, himself, opened the opportunity to do ministry in 4 of the 49 TIG Camps. Actually, we were asked how many we would like to visit for ministry but our itinerary time constraints would only allow 4. These transition camps are small, 100 to 400, in comparison to the prisons but we were always warmly received just like we are in the prisons. What a wonderful and exciting opportunity.

We saw God bless your generous giving as He increased the value of the American dollar and we were able to receive 5,450 Bibles, putting us over our goal of 5,000.

There were so many miracles of God on this trip, things that left us absolutely speechless, things that were amazing, things that only He could do. For the 14,732 souls that asked God for forgiveness and were added to the Lamb's Book of Life ..... I do not have adequate words with which to give Him praise.

There are many exciting new things that I will be blogging about soon.

One of which is.... I have been invited to be the main speaker at a crusade in Kigali, Rwanda next March. It is for the Great Lakes area of Burundi, Tanzania, Congo, Uganda and Rwanda with 100,000 expected to attend. This is WAY to big, I am so praying about this and would appreciate your prayers.

It's 1:30 am and I am sitting in my living room, safe and sound, after a long 2 days travel, having left Rwanda on Saturday.
Steve returned last week and the rest of us flew out of Rwanda to Belgium together. Pastor Al, Kathy and Pastor Roger flew home on another flight and Lovena flew home with me arriving at PDX at 11:30.
Sorry I was not able to blog more as the internet was down and I had computer issues.

Training......

This week was awesome. Pastor Al, Steve and Pastor Roger and Pastor Peter Deyali our translator, were able to do the three day spiritual leaders training at Butare prison. This coming week we will be doing the one day step-up training with Rilima & Nsinda prisons. What a week!!! We had 68 men in the training, 10 guards on the first day of training, three guards on the last day of training and 250 men who watched, listened and stayed with us outside the walls of the training center all three days.

We had seven denominations including three Muslims among our spiritual leaders.
Our first day we spent most of the day on relationship building sharing our testimonies and talking about our background experiences including family pictures. Then Pastor Al did an incredible job of teaching on the results of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. He took us from Adam to the return of Christ in Revelation in about two hours. I followed up his teaching with the 7 miracles at conversion.

The next day we taught on the 7 steps to spiritual growth... we continued to build relationships with personal illustrations and activities to build community. We were attempting to break down some of the denominational boundaries that exit even among prison spiritual leaders. We were emphasizing throughout the teaching of one Lord, one faith, one baptism. We finished the training on the third day with biblical character studies on servant-leadership.

Hierarchy is huge among African churches. Pastor Al finished our teaching with a humbling and incredibly moving illustration by washing one of the men's feet from Mt. 13. Jesus washing the disciples feet.

His question was a great question: What would you do if you only had one day left to live? Jesus met with his disciples and washed their feet, a common thing to do in Israel by the lowest of servants. We trust this teaching will be imbedded in their hearts and minds and their future teaching of others. We had an awesome time as a team and made some very special friends among the prisoners.

Sorry we have not been able to post while we were in Butare but the internet was not available.

Today was our last day of ministry at Butare Prison and because it was visitor day at the prison the Director asked us to arrive at 8 and finish at 11, which we did.

The women's team arrived at the courtyard inside the women's area about 8:30 and waited until the sound system and women prisoners arrived. I presume they had not been told of the 1 hour earlier schedule as when the saw the big metal door open and we started to enter, they started running to get seated. They began singing and I began greeting as many as I could, some with a cheek to cheek greeting, some with a hug and some, because there were so many around me, I could only extend my hands which they eagerly shook.

Kathy did 1 teaching, followed by 2 songs from their choir all dressed in their colorful choir outfits, then she did a second teaching. I am so very thankful for both Kathy and Lovena as they have shared their hearts and God's Word with such passion and love. I could not hold back the tears as I looked at all the women following the scriptures Kathy was using in their very own Bibles.

again for each Bible you graciously provided.
They would not allow photos but it is a photo in my mind I will never forget.

I shared at the end of our time with them an object lesson and explained the scripture bookmark we were leaving for them so they could remind themselves everyday of the truth of God's Word concerning who they are and what they now posses as born again children of God. I had shared previously with them about believing a lie from the enemy, for a long time, that I had no value and how I wanted them to tell themselves the truth from God's Word. I pulled up the faces of a few of the seated women, looking her in the eyes, and said "You have great value". And then I asked them to tell their neighbor the same thing which they readily did with laughter, hugs and smiles. Then I asked them to make me a promise...... that they would tell each other that same thing many times a day and they agreed to do so. I finished by telling them how much we loved them.

Those of you who know me personally know that by then the tears were rolling down my cheeks so I had to explain to them that they were tears of joy for the time we had been able to spend with them.

Alfred arrived to escort us out but as we were about to exit 6 ladies appeared with arms laden with Peace Baskets, decorative baskets and woven wall hangings as a "thank you" for all of us, including Mary, a woman who oversees the women prisoners. Mary informed us that when she went to check on the ladies yesterday they were ALL reading their Bibles.....every single one.

The baskets are such beautiful gifts, ones we will treasure for sure. As we were leaving three more women handed me additional different baskets and later I discovered one had a tiny handwritten note inside that gave her name and in Kinyarwanda it said " God bless you. Pray for me and I shall meet you in heaven".

As we got outside the walls and were walking toward the area where the men were getting ready for the Certificate of Completion ceremony the women prisoners rushed to the few window openings in the 20 foot brick walls to wave and get one last glimpse of us.

I don't have adequate words.............

The men have had a wonderful time doing the Spiritual Leader Training and from all the terrific reports, Pastor Al, Steve and Pastor Roger will have stories and memories for a lifetime.

We have such wonderful Rwandan volunteer partners here, they are a vital part of the ministry we are doing. Alfred and Blessing Mupenzi and Pastor Peter Deyali translate for us, not just word for word but they capture the biblical concept we are conveying.
The nine of us make a powerful team.

I will have to tell you in person about the adventure the women's team plus Alfred had yesterday at Mpanga Prison but when I was standing in front of and realized that I was going to preach to approx. 7,000 men and women prisoners I turned to Kathy and Lovena and said "You'd better be praying!!!" to which Kathy said, "Your David with 5 smooth stones facing Goliath."

I hope one of the men will be able to blog and tell you about the Trainings. We are all going to miss Steve as he is leaving for America tomorrow. I know he is anxious to see his wife, Joyce, and tell her what he saw God do here.

Continue to pray that the team would have renewed strength for our remaining time here as we have a crusade tomorrow, 1 more TIG camp crusade and two more prisons to do ministry in.

Ministry Partners,

Miracles...... now that's an interesting word especially because we say that word so very many times every day.

Yesterday, Sunday, we were privileged to minister to a Christian high school where one of the requirements is that the youth must acknowledge that they have already accepted Christ as their Savior.
But from my past experiences I know that because of their religious heritage many think that knowing who Jesus is and what he did makes him a Christian.
I wanted the team to all be used to do the speaking but told them I felt it still needed to be evangelistic too. Steve, Lovena, and Pastor Roger shared as did Kathy, who had many in tears. Pastor Al also spoke and gave one invitation and later in the day Alfred felt another one was important, so he gave one.

We can only offer the Savior praise for the seven students who receive God's free gift of salvation.
These high schoolers are the leaders of tomorrow and the biblical questions they asked were evidence of hearts that are seeking to understand Scriptures and how to apply those Scriptures to their lives. I for one, was so glad that Pastor Al is a part of our team as he readily answered their questions with the truth of God's Word.

A question-and-answer period that was to last one hour, beginning at three o'clock, actually lasted until five o'clock.

One of the interesting questions asked was concerning IRM. That student wanted to know why I had chosen that name for the ministry instead of using my own name. Of course a part of my answer was that God had given us the name International Reconciliation Ministries but can you imagine how ridiculous it would sound to be saying "Arlene Tatum Ministries". As always, God's design is far better, to say the least.

We had taken with us 130 NIV English Bibles to distribute and then we realized God in fact had done another miracle. As Steve would say it was another "WOW" moment when we were told by the headmaster that they're discipleship materials were formatted for NIV Bibles and they had not been able to get any!!!

The drive home took almost 2 hours and you could tell we were all reflecting on the day as no one was talking much.

Flexibility...........hummmm....... may not be a word we say often here that is one we actually do very often.

Today, Monday, we thought we had our plans pretty much laid out but the flexibility started soon after breakfast at nine o'clock when Pastor Peter arrived and informed us that some of the HIV women's group were waiting for us. We had thought we would see them about 1 PM but we decided to go earlier as Pastor Roger needed some printing done.

What a blessing it is to have Pastor Peter be so gracious in accompany us here and there to do errands along with the Crusades.

Once again we saw God's hand at work as Pastor Peter, Kathy, Lovena and I were at the printers and who should walk in but Alfred to pick up some printing for Plan Incorporated, the company where he works. God had that encounter time just right as he was there to do the dickering for our cost price and as usual he got the price reduced. His appearing at just that time was not an element of chance but once again God's hand of provision. Thank you, Jesus.

Then we were off to meet with the HIV/AIDS women. We expected to see 15 there when we arrived we could see by the numbers of pairs of shoes outside that there were far more than 15 and in fact as we entered the room it was packed. Many women had heard their neighbors talking about coming and also wanted to come and some had just heard their beautiful singing that had started at 9 AM and they wanted to come and join the group.

Allison and the other women seamstresses from New Life Church would be so pleased to know that they're beautiful handmade shopping bags brought such smiles and joy to these women. We could only stay a few moments, our time with them was far too short.

Then we headed back to Moucecore to have lunch with the men and finish packing for our trip to Butare tomorrow. The men loaded Bibles and Discipleship Booklets and Alfred arrived right after we had finished lunch.

At 2 PM we headed off to do a crusade at the 3rd TIG Camp. It was a small camp with men and women and it has only been there about four months. We were warmly welcomed and showed around the camp that is still under construction. Lovena got some great photos of the cooking area as well as some of the men who were eating their dinner. They do road and other construction duties and women in their long fabric skirts work right alongside the men.

We watched another miracle as the Holy Spirit spoke into the hearts of all, except five, who attended the crusade received God's free gift of salvation. Even one man from administration came and pulled me aside as we were about to leave and with tears in his eyes revealed he too had prayed the sinners prayer.
Once again the Bibles made such an impact on each one, their faces and singing told the story.

It's been a most marvelous day.... another day to give God praise. All of us on this team , Rwandan and American, feel very privileged to watch what God does each day.

Tomorrow we travel to Butare for a Prison Crusade, a 3 day Spiritual Leader Training and 2 day Women's Conference. The Women and Alfred will also hold a Crusade at Mpanga Prison.

I am having computer problems and that along with the internet issues please pray that I will be able to continue to post.

Ministry Partners,

Greetings from Rwanda, the land of 1000 hills and 1000 smiles.

It has been another busy day for the team. In the morning, Alfred, Steve, Kathy, Lovena and Arlene all made a trip into town to exchange US dollars for Rwandan francs, purchase 40 cases (24 bottles ea.) of water and pick up supplies for the Spiritual leaders training.

Some of the team also bought a few souvenirs for family and friends back home. Steve had a brief lesson in "bartering" from Arlene and did quite well. The Rwandans quite enjoy that part of selling their wares. It brings smiles and laughter to all involved.

Once arriving back at Moucecore the team had lunch together and was joined by Pastor Peter, who would be doing ministry with us during the afternoon and Blessing, Alfred's wife, also accompanied us.

IRM held another crusade at a second "Blue Shirt" TIG Camp. These are facilities for paroles who are in transition from prison to their villages and they are doing "community service" before they enter the main stream of life in Rwanda.
The drive there was beautiful as we drove 45 min. over a very steep, dirt, rutted road to the top of a mountain. We passed a number of very small villages that brought the comment from a couple of team members "Looks like a good place for Village evangelism to me",to which everyone heartily agreed.

It is an amazing thing with the amount of poverty here that the children seem as if they are untouched by it. Broad smiles and waving arms are displayed by all of them as we drive by. At one point we made a brief stop and the children were very excited, verbally expressing their excitement, at touching the "white" arm that one of the team members had extended out the window.

The camp Coordinator greeted us warmly and we were amazed to find in the details just how much God had gone before us that we would find favor with this man. It was discovered that both he and Pastor Peter were from the same refugee camp in Uganda!!!!
Now, just what are the chances of that happening?

There are about 240 men and women in this camp and 170 of them attended the crusade. They had been informed we were coming so when we arrived we could hear them singing to the rhythm of two drums. Alfred immediately joined them in their singing and began to lead them in worship.

The Coordinator was quite gracious in his introduction of us and instructed those present to listen to what Arlene had to say followed by staying through the entire service himself.

Arlene introduced the team and Pastor Al opened in prayer, then Pastor Roger shared his testimony. Arlene spoke a message on "Fear" and how making choices out of fear and not trusting God can cause us to make very poor choices for ourselves followed by devastating consequences. She spoke about the nation of Israel, King Uzziah and her personal testimony.
The team was privileged to see the Holy Spirit speak into the hearts of those present as all but 10 received God's free gift of salvation.

Then it was time to hand out the Bibles and Discipleship Booklets that we had brought. We told them we had plenty and to stay seated while we passed them out. Some smiled so broadly and said "thank you" while some men just wept. Then it was a time to celebrate, to sing and dance giving God praise for this most precious gift. It's really quite a sight to see them clutching their Bibles over their heads and celebrating with such joy.

At the end of the crusade the Coordinator addressed those present stating that he to was impacted by what he heard. That was extremely transparent for some one in his position.

Once outside and standing beside the van getting ready to leave Arlene gathered the women around her and placed a donated scarf and tract into the hands of the women as she "African greeted" each one.
As we drove away from the camp I could not contain the tears of gratitude to the Lord that I felt.

Lovena got some great photos of the beautiful landscape as we descended the mountain.

None of us are used to eating full meals like we do here but once again we were hungry and enjoyed our evening meal together, it must surely be the heat.

We spent some time debriefing and working out some details for tomorrows ministry before saying good night to Pastor Peter, Alfred and Blessing.

We see so many new opportunities and miracles every day that I almost become overwhelmed as I watch God work. His provision and care for us is unmatched.

Tomorrow is Sunday and a full day of ministry for us so I will say bye for now.

God is so good.
The people here are so open to the God and His word. It makes me understand what God means when He says the harvest is plenty but the workers are few. It is so evident that God is at work in this country.

I miss my family and my back is tired of the thin mattress but how can I complain when God has let me be apart of something so wonderful, so eternal. I can not!

So, God I thank you for this amazing day and I thank you for 36 more souls that decided to follow you. I thank you that you let me be apart of effecting eternity. I thank you for the connections that were made and renewed today in the family of God, and I thank you for helping me to overcome my fear enough that I could see you do these amazing things.

Thank you for everyone who is praying... your prayers are needed... your prayers are being answered.

IRM was the first ministry to hold a crusade at a "Blue Shirt" Camp. These are facilities for paroles who are in transition from prison for the genocide and they are doing community service before they enter the main stream of life in Rwanda.
We were welcomed with open arms by the administration. Many came to Christ. Bibles were placed in their hands and the joy on their faces was indescribable.

Arlene, Kathy and Lovena went today to Prison Fellowship's HIV women's meeting and shared the gospel and Bible teaching and enjoyed lunch with the women. One woman expressed, "When Arlene and her friends come, we are not only fed, but we are full in our hearts as well."

Pastor Al, Alfred, Pastor Roger and Steve went and visited Pastor Peter of the Four Sq. Church. He was in a motorcycle accident in which he injured his back, two weeks later he was returning from his father-in-laws funeral and was in an automobile accident and was in a coma for two days. He had blunt force trauma and severe chest pain. He is at home and doing much better, but is to be resting at home for at least a month. We were able to pray with him, his wife and two beautiful daughters.

We are all finally getting use to the time change and starting to sleep most of the night.

Tomorrow is the Four Sq Women's conference and a village outreach for the guys.

We are seeing God work out details and guide us in places we cannot even imagine. The children of Rwanda are wonderful, the opportunities are limitless and the joy of serving on this team is an incredible privilege.

Grace & Peace to each of you in America,
Let me get it over with up front,"Overwhelming"
Our travels to Rwanda allowed God to demonstrate His grace.
We saw God miraculously work in several circumstances, including allowing us to not miss a connection which would have added several hours on to our trip.
Pastor Al, Kathy, Lovena, Steve, and Pastor Roger really enjoyed getting to know each other during the travel time(though Pastor Al was doing a lot of catch up on sleep!)
Our plane could not initially land at Kigali because of severe lightning storms, so we were diverted to Entebbe, Uganda but we were up and going back to Rwanda within an hour.
After going to bed at 1:00am we were up and going early to minister at Pastor Deo's church(Director of Prison Fellowship/Rwanda). Pastor Al gave an incredible 20 min message (forty minutes including translation)traveling from Genesis to Revelation - 27 responded to Christ. Today we passed out tracts and walked and talked with locals while we were getting supplies for our time here.
Huge prayer need: Favor from God regarding our schedule and open doors...
So many amazing and "overwhelming" opportunities to see the Spirit of God work...

They're here, they're here, the plane has finally landed and only four hours later than scheduled!!!!
An unusual storm over Kigali prevented the plane from landing as scheduled and a number of planes circled the airport and then were rerouted to another country but then I will let one of the team that was in the plane blog about that.

Thank you Jesus for bringing them safely here.

It was so nice to see their smiling, tired faces and God's blessing in all of it was a safe landing at 11 PM not only for them but for every single piece of luggage.

The storm was unusual and has continued even through this evening with lots of lightning, thunder and a torrential downpour. The nationals say it is very odd to have this kind of weather at this time of year.

This morning we attended the church where Pastor Deo from Prison Fellowship is the pastor. I suggested that Pastor Al preach and as usual he did a wonderful job with 27 receiving God's free gift of salvation. The whole morning was filled with wonderful worship in a style only the Rwandans can do.

After the service Alfred, Blessing and the children joined us for lunch and then left for their home as they had to be back at Moucecore for the IRM "Welcome Dinner" at 5 PM. About 24 old and new ministry partners have been invited and I am so excited to the faces of those who worked with us last year.

The floral bouquet that Alfred and Blessing gave me was on the center of the head table and the tables were decorated with different colors curly ribbon and candy.

It was a very nice evening that ended by taking Communion together led by Pastor Roger.

Tomorrow there are meetings scheduled and the team will go into town to exchange money.

I think they will probably sleep very well tonight.

Ministry Partners and Friends,

It has been another beautiful sunny day in Kigali and although it is warm the air is cooled with a gentle breeze.

Today was cause to once again do the "happy dance" as cases and cases of Bibles were delivered by the Rwanda Bible Society to the locked storeroom donated by Moucecore Guesthouse where I and the team will be staying.

"Thank You" for your sacrificial giving so that others might be blessed.

Not to far away are many churches and one of them had services almost all day today so I was blessed by their wonderful worship. Is that not a great combination?.....sunshine + worship + Bibles & Discipleship Booklets to distribute free to those who are so hungry for the written Word of God. Perhaps tomorrow morning I can go there before I work with that new group of HIV/AIDS ladies. I purchased candy to share with them and I will be giving them one of the beautiful scarves you donated.

Ministry Partners,

I have not been able to post to this blog since I've been in Rwanda because the Internet service at Moucecore guesthouse has not been up but I was just informed this evening that is was working.

It's hard to believe that I have been here five days already and those have been very busy days indeed.

Saturday I was invited to speak the next day, Sunday, at Church on the Rock for both the first service, English, and second service, Kinyarwanda. I planned on preaching the same message both times but the people from the first service stayed for the second. I am thankful to the Holy Spirit for giving me the second new message "right on the spot".

Seeing so many familiar faces and giving and receiving so many hugs makes me feel right at home. But just doing the every day things take so much longer than in America.

After leaving yesterday morning at 8:30 for town with Alfred Mupenzi, the IRM Operations Supervisor, and Pastor Peter Deyali, Grace Treasurers Church, we exchanged money, went to 1 bank and waited in line 1 hour (all to be told they could not help us), purchased water for the team's arrival, stopped by the Bible society, had lunch, checked on the cost of printing the Discipleship Booklets, had some other copies made, went to a 2^nd bank (they could help us), briefly met with Pastor Deo from Prison Fellowship and finally arriving home at 4:30. Because we had the car and driver for over 4 hours (considered 1/2 day) the cost was $80 instead of $40.

Hummmm…. the same thing happened last Friday and today.

Thankful for my first day of rest tomorrow, at least until tomorrow evening when I was asked to speak at a home meeting of some officials. Thursday, Friday and Sat. before the team arrives are all full and busy. I think next year I will come 2 weeks early - Lord willing and the Team here agrees.

I am so looking forward to Friday as I have the opportunity to work with a new group of 40 HIV/AIDS ladies.

Today, we had more errands to do in town this time making purchases for ministry and the teams arrival. While there I purchased a beautiful piece of fabric to have made into a dress and then had to have both of the soles of my shoes repaired at a huge cost of 60 cents each and it was a very well done job!

Late this afternoon I met with Bishop Denis from Bethel Pentecostal Church at his request. He invited me to be one of the speakers for the Regional Crusade and Conference, March 5-18,2012. During our 1 1/2 hour meeting he reported that they expected to have at least 100,000 in attendance. I am going to have to spend much time in prayer concerning this opportunity!!!

Pastor Peter & his wife – Foursquare Gospel Church Rwanda – had his back injured due to a motorbike accident and then was involved in a second accident, followed by the death of his father-in-law.

Baby Arlene Mupenzi (3 yrs.) – hospitalized 4 days ago with tonsils problems and unable to eat due to sores in her mouth

Alfred Mupenzi – still dealing with effects of Malaria

Hello from the Portland airport. I arrived at the airport at 4:45 AM and by 5:30 AM, I was sitting at my designated date. They did not even the weigh my bags but just asked me about their weight. I guess it was a good thing that I weighed them at least six times so I was sure they would not be overweight. Just proof that Jesus is in control and guiding my steps. Have had a great opportunity to visit with a couple of ladies that are sitting with me.

It's hard to believe that tomorrow I leave for my 8th trip to the beautiful country of Rwanda. It will be great to touch bases again with our ministry partners and friends there.
Rwanda is a country that focuses on relationships and building relationships with many of the beautiful people there has been a blessing from God to my heart.

This past year has been filled with mountain tops and valleys but the valleys have been a time learning to depend and trust, even more, the dear Savior who has a good plan for me and IRM. Jer. 29:11

I could only offer praises to the Lord as some of those valleys were just evidence that once again God is going to allow the team, and me, see Him do great and mighty things in Rwanda. The U.S. team He has put together are dedicated servants of God and I could not be more pleased that He has called each one of them to minister there with IRM for 3 weeks. The same can be said of the hard working volunteer Rwanda team that is preparing for our arrival.

I will depart for Rwanda tomorrow and the team of Pastor Roger Stevens, Steve Van Buren from Klamath Falls and Pastor Al & Kathy Carpenter and Lovena Flaherty from Canby will depart on June 10. All of us will return to America on July 3.

IRM has made the decision ......

Ministry Partners,

The decision has been made by IRM to take one combined team for three weeks of ministry in Rwanda this summer.

God made it very clear that this was His plan and that the two teams for two weeks each, was our plan. "Thank you" for your prayers in this matter and please stand with us in giving God praise for His faithfulness as we have seen his hand in leading us and giving us wisdom in our decision.

The team will consist of 6 members, three men doing the 3 - day prison Pastor's Training and three women involved in Women's Conferences for the prison women. Additional ministry will include HIV/AIDS groups, church services, crusades to villages and prisons. And of course, any other "on the spot" ministry opportunities the Lord might present us with .

Exciting times......

These are exciting times for IRM and for the ministry God has called us to in Rwanda, Africa.

Village crusade

God is expanding the ministry of IRM and every new step of opportunity that God opens is an exciting new adventure.

As I write this blog, I hold in my hands the IRM Rwanda Constitution. It's a very interesting document written in French, English and Kinyarwanda. The document has been signed by 17 Rwanda pastors and partners. It has also been signed and approved by 5 pastors from New Life Foursquare Church and myself. Next week it will be sent to Rwanda and our Operations Supervisor, Alfred Mupenzi will take it to the government for approval. The government will then recognize IRM as an NGO, a private, non-government organization doing ministry. We currently have an office that is "manned" by a Rwandan pastor and it is open for villagers to come in and pray.

As God leads, the current plan is to take 2 teams in June/July and as I work on those plans, I cannot help but get excited.

Thanks for your faithful prayers as I traveled to S. Oregon and N. Calif doing fund-raising for our 2011 trip. It is an exciting time as I see the Lord expand the ministry we are doing in Rwanda. I am so thankful for the doors the Lord has opened and the favor we have found with the government and prison wardens.
International Reconciliation Ministries continues to raise funds for Bibles for Rwanda. It's so difficult to see Rwandans holding out their hands, begging for a Bible and not having enough. From the villagers to the prisoners....the need it huge and at $8.50 for a Bible and Discipleship Booklet in their language....it is a bargain.

Dear Ministry Partners,

Let me first say ....how very much I appreciate your faithful support of me and the ministry God has called us, together, to do.

Village children...No white person had ever been there before!!!

It blesses my heart to know how you cover me with prayer as I continue, with God's leading and strength, to take "one more step".

One step forward is to work towards IRM being registered as a non- profit organization serving in Rwanda. The first draft is done and edits are being worked on as it will be presented in Kinyarwanda, French & English. Please pray for wisdom for us and our Rwandan partners and staff as they work through the "Constitution for IRM".

Also, please continue to pray for our Pilot Program Chaplin/Pastor Teams as they continue, each month, to visit their assigned prison, work with the pastors who received training and submit reports to IRM. These three teams will give us valuable information for making any needed adjustments in our Training Program.

Another step is to travel to Southern Oregon/Northern Calif. to speak in some partnering churches and spend a few days with family and friends.

Please pray that:

Hearts to be touched with the continuing huge need for Bibles in Rwanda
The Holy Spirit would give me accurate words to share with everyone, some of what I saw God do during the last trip to that beautiful country.

I think summer has arrived in the Portland area.

I have finally finished my new Power Point Presentation and I will be sharing it for the first time on Oct. 19th for the Women's Bible Study at Mid-Valley Community Church in Woodburn.
Following are photos and the story about one prison pastor, Pastor Cornelius, that is noteworthy from my presentation.

Alfred, Arlene and Pastor Cornelius, the head pastor that I worked with at Nsinda Prison on three of my previous ministry trips but he had been released when I arrived at the prison last year. Alfred was able to get his contact information and he came to see me on this trip.

Alfred, Arlene and Pastor Cornelius, who traveled 2+ hours on the back of a motor bike (Rwandan taxi) to come and see me, bringing me a photo of his wife and small church. He told me he had been in prison for 4 1/2 yrs. without a trial and at his trial, he was found innocent. He said he was not bitter as he knew God had allowed him to be there so he could share the love of Jesus Christ with the other prisoners, and that he had returned to Nsinda Prison a number of times to share the Gospel. He went with our team on our final day of ministry there and we entered the prison hand in hand. What an wonderful example of submission to God's plan for his life, and not one of anger or bitterness toward God or the men that falsely accused him.....WOW

My friend Pastor Cornelius and his wife, white head wrap & dress, with their church and congregation. His wife kept the church going when he was imprisoned without trial for 41/2 years. He was found innocent and released in 2009 before I arrived for my 6th trip.

With the P.P.P. done I have started some "housecleaning"...not my favorite thing I must admit but I have been able to listen, while I cleaned, to a Southern Gospel Station on my laptop. I heard this group sing this song for the first time and then found it on "youtube". It has a powerful message of God's grace to each of us so I am sharing the link with you, just copy and paste it into your browser.

It's hard to believe that I have been home from Rwanda for three weeks. But I am happy to report that my violent cough is almost completely gone,
Thank You Jesus !!!

I have been very busy working on a new Power Point Presentation and I am having so much fun choosing from all the photos the team took while we were there.

Although you saw the first photo in a previous blog, the second and third ones were taken this year. They really make me smile for it reminds me that the Lord does have a marvelous sense of humor........I'll let you figure out what I mean by that.

It is so very hard to believe that today is our last day in Rwanda.

Yesterday we met with Pastor Deo and the Prison Fellowship staff. They fixed us a delicious Rwandan buffet and gave gifts to each one on our team. Once again it was a time of singing and dancing, this time you REALLY would be surprised who and even with a Sycamore tree bark hat!!!! The hugs and tears from Rwandans and Americans that followed seem to be common between us now as we know the time for our departure is near.

This afternoon Pastor Roger, Alfred and Arlene met with the IRM Core Team, pastors from the Foursquare Church and Chaplins from Prison Fellowship who will do follow-up in the 3 prisons with the spiritual leaders who took the training. As they turn in their monthly reports it will help Pastor Roger, my pastors and I determine how this pilot program is doing.

Last night we had our final Rwandan dinner of fish, fries, spaghetti noodles, sauce and oranges for desert......hum, I had hoped for some of the delicious pineapple.

Today we went shopping for Rwandan coffee and picked up the last few gifts for family and friends, our plane leaves at 7:50pm.

We have so much to give God praise for but it will be very difficult to have adequate words to describe what we have seen God do here. Words.........there just aren't enough, the right kind or enough time here to discuss such amazing events.

Final Day at Nsinda Prison

Today was our final time of teaching and work at the last prison.
Jon and Roger had an awesome time with 57 spiritual leaders while Arlene, Dorothea and Tanya had their second day of Women's Conference with over 400 women. The smiles, the hugs, the times of confession and release of bitterness and guilt was astonishing.

We gave out the paper certificates to those men who completed the course. It seems really insignificant to us but one of the men who found out the last hour of our training that he was being released from prison came back in his street clothes and received his certificate before leaving the prison. He was so extremely excited and the joy poured out of him as Roger and Pastor Peter prayed with him before he left.

Roger awoke with new energy and feeling much better with his cold.

Dorothea was completely exhausted but the Holy Spirit filled her with strength and boldness greater than anytime on this adventure. Many women's lives were touched today by the teaching and witness of Pastor Dorothea and Arlene.

We are back at Moucecore resting for the night. We have several meetings tomorrow and then packing on Thursday. Thursday night at 7:50PM we board the plane to leave Rwanda.

Please pray for Arlene, it is very difficult to say goodbye to her son Alfred and his wife Blessing. There will be many tears as we leave this beautiful country with absolutely beautiful people overcoming an incredible history only made possible by God's forgiving love, His grace and the Holy Spirit's work of Reconciliation and Restoration. We have all been deeply affected. Our lives will never be the same.

Please pray for our final days of packing and travel. We arrive home on Saturday, June 19th in Portland at about 11:00PM.

It's so very hard to believe that our time here is almost over.

Our "Thank You" dinner went well last night with 21 present. Tears abounded as many shared what it meant to them to be part of this combined team by prayer or action. The wife of one pastor who helped said she prayed every day for us and the prisoners although she could not go herself....someone there had murdered her first husband and 5 children. Rwandans and Americans crying together and giving God praise together for what He has allowed us see him do on this trip. No more words.......

The men did the 2nd day of training with the pastors at Nsinda Prison while the ladies went with me to do errands, banking and finalizing "bill paying" for services for the team.

We had a very interesting lunch guest.....Pastor Cornelius. He was the head pastor at Nsinda prison for three of my trips but last year when I came they said he had been released. I never knew his "story" but he seemed to be a gentle, quiet spoken man. Every time I saw the photo of us with Alfred I wondered what had become of him. Alfred contacted the prison and was able to obtain his contact information to advise him that I was here. He made a 2+ hour ride to come and bring me a photo of his wife, family and church family.
After we had chatted a bit I asked him how long he had actually been in prison and he said 4 years adding....all that time without a trial !!!!! When he finally did go to trial he said he was found innocent and that he was not bitter as he knew God had allowed him to be there so he could share the gospel with the other inmates. I was so glad to finally know his "story" one of courage by God's design and not hatred and anger.
He will meet us at the gate at Nsinda Prison tomorrow and sit in on the final training and certificate presentation.

Also tomorrow, Pastor Dorothea, Tanya and I will finish the second conference day with the women at Nsinda.

With God's strength the team is doing well but continue to pray for Rogers health. We have been told that so very many of you are praying and it is very evident here.

The very fact that I am writing this post is proof that God is concerned about even small things like laptops that refuse to work. After being told that the hard drive on my computer was locked and the computer tech Tim (on another team also staying here) made a Skype call to Mike (the computer tech at my church) I was told that nothing could be done until I returned home as there must be something wrong with the keypad. Tim worked on it for 2 hours and put the password in every way possible and then some and it just would not unlock.

I went to bed saying "Regardless of the circumstance I will give you praise Jesus as you ARE in control". As I woke the next morning I was talking to the Lord, telling Him how much I needed the computer when He told me to pick it up and open it, which I did. I opened it and the screen was still black as I typed in the password AGAIN and taa-daa the screen opened right up. I heard Tim talking to someone in the hallway and took the open computer for him to see. The look on his face was priceless as he did a double take and I said "Boy, do you have a story to tell your techie friends". Our laughter and praise was a great way to start the morning.

Yesterday the team went to the Colonels Village (Alfred has dubbed it the IRM Village). There isn't enough space to tell you the laughter we all had as a new driver, Aaron, and then Alfred drove. If you have never had the absolute pleasure of taking a ride with Dorothea and Tanya you are really missing out. I was sitting between them and they both had us laughing so hard our sides ached. Of course Roger and Jon had never been on this village trip before so their remarks coupled with our laughter made for a VERY memorable ride up, you would not believe it but at times Jon was actually speechless !!! I think Pastor Roger had had enough from all of us as he decided to safely drive the Colonels NEW jeep down the hills back to Kigali. Only a jeep could go where we went....up, down and sometimes sideways and I am NOT joking.
Our time at the village was wonderful and the evening concluded with a dinner of roast goat (on a stick) and roast matoke (a starchie green banana) with the village leaders. Looking up at the star studded sky made it a most wonderful end to a terrific day. There is just nothing like seeing people receive Christ's gift of salvation and then so filled with joy at receiving a Bible of their very own that they sing and dance, giving God praise.
We arrived at the Colonels and after he greeted us he drove us home. Since he does not worry about getting a ticket the ride was VERY interesting around corners and bumps. All with Roger, Alfred and Aaron (all former DRIVERS)in the back seat. Of course dear Dorothea just couldn't resist a whispered comment "He'd better be careful, the back seat is already full of ex-drivers". Have you ever tried not making a sound while you are laughing so hard that you can't catch your breath?

A few nights ago we were returning to Kigali after dark and were stopped at a check point by 2 police officers. Alfred told them we had been to Nsinda prison doing ministry and the officer asked for our passports. Alfred handed the officer two of my tracts instead. The officer went to the front of the vehicle and looked at them in the headlights then waved us on. Do you know anywhere else in the world where a Gospel tract would work in place of a passport??????

Today, we were at Nsinda Prison where the new warden is a tall, young, very handsome man. I think I have found favor with him as he insisted on carrying my backpack and personally escorted the women to the Women's area and stayed to introduce us. The women had worked so very hard to make the area presentable and had a mic system set up and the area covered for us so we would not be in the sun while sharing. About 350 women were added to the Lamb's book of Life. I will never have accurate words to convey what the gift of a Bible means to them.

Even Pastor Roger's and Jon's teaching area was surrounded with used tarps so the Pastors Training would not be interrupted by the other prisoners.
It was a good day for all but Roger is still struggling with health issues.

Tomorrow we will be at the Foursquare church here and then hosting a "Thank You" dinner for those who have helped us so much.

We are seeing God work at every turn, your continued prayers are appreciated.

Butari Prison

What an amazing day it has been.

Pastor Roger and Jon went to the 1930 Prison to do the second day of Servant Leadership Training (Pastors Training). They report a good day and have great stories they will communicate themselves but while they were delayed at the prison gate God had arranged a divine appointment for them. They met the second in command of all the Rwandan prisons and as he questioned them, Roger was able to give an accurate and detailed account of what IRM is doing in the prisons. Once he saw our official document giving approval for what IRM is doing he saw the signature of the Minister of Defense and said " Oh, that's my boss. He then asked to be given a report after we conclude our time here and Roger has agreed to work on the requested report.

The ladies traveled over 2 hours to Butari Prison. The drive was so beautiful as usual and although we went over some mountains the road was paved nicely and it was not curvie like the road to Musanzi , which was much appreciated by Pastor Dorothea and Tanya.

I had not visited this prison before so was surprised to see them building a new prison just down from the old one. We were taken to the new one although it still has much work to be done. The meeting place is the best yet, large but open on the side for lots of ventilation. About 3,500 came to the crusade, so very many received God's free gift of salvation. There were not enough Bibles for all of them. It is a hard thing to have so many put their hands out and beg for God's written word and not have enough. Tanya and I were both brought to tears as we drove away.

We were informed this evening that the bridge we had just come over to return to Kigali had collapsed and people were now stranded and not able to get back into town.
Again and again and again we see God care for us.

Tomorrow the entire team will be at the 1930 Prison. We will end the 2nd day of the Women's Conference and be with the men for the Certificate presentation program. It is my understanding it will be in front of the entire prison with newspaper and perhaps TV coverage.

Dear Ministry Partners,

Thank you for your prayers concerning my sore throat, it's so very much better.

Today was the first day of the Pastors Training at the 1930 City Prison and the first day of the Woman's two day conference.
Pastor Roger and Jon say "things" were so very different from the Rilima training and I will say no more !!!!

Pastor Dorothea, Tanya and I had a good day with the women but once again we observed the sheer desperation the prisoners have for a Bible. The need is almost overwhelming.

The IRM Operations Supervisor Alfred has been so very busy keeping everything coordinated and translating for me during the crusades. He has caught my sore throat and violent coughing. Please pray for him.

Also pray for this wonderful team of "first timers". They are having to process so many new things and at half way through our time here the busy schedule, heat & humidity along with some fatigue is beginning to set in.

I am so thankful for this team as we all learn from every event and situation so that we will be able to prepare for the 2011 trip.

Sunday, June 6th -Rwanda update

"Overwhelming" is the catchphrase often used as we debrief each evening. This is Pastor Roger reporting tonight. We are back in Kigali and will begin our three day pastor training at the 1930 Central prison. But I want to share with you two highlights of the past three days in the Musanzi area. Our team went to the Rehabilitation Center for Congo soldiers turning themselves in. Arlene preached a sermon empowered by the Holy Spirit and we watched over 220 of the 230 present pray to receive Christ. We then gave each of them a Bible and as they received their Bible they went back to their seats without any instruction and began to read. When they all had received their Bibles they began to sing and hold their Bibles over their heads with huge smiles on their faces and exuberant singing and dancing. Without question is was the most moving experience for me so far.
There is much to report on but let me share one other highlight. Bishop John is founder of Prison Fellowship Rwanda; Anglican Bishop for Northern Rwanda and has a huge ministry even for US standards; helped establish a reconciliation village in which over 300 perpetrators and victims reside together in unity and faith.
All of this to say, Arlene gave the message at the 7:30am service today. She wore a white robe and was quite stunning. Please keep praying... the team is doing well but fatigue and emotional overload needs the Holy Spirits anointing to move forward with power and courage. Thank you... we love you... Grace & Peace,

Musanzi.....

Dear Ministry Partners,

We are now in Northern Rwanda in the Musanzi area.

Internet service in Kigali has been down so I have not been able to send a new post.
At every turn we are continuing to watch God do great things.

For three days I have struggled with a sore, scratchie throat that does not allow me to get a good nights rest so I would appreciate your prayers. At times when I was to preach, and I am coughing violently, the Lord's hand upon me is so very evident when He enables me to share what the Holy Spirit has given me..... without a single cough !!!!

We have just had dinner and the team has all retired after a long day of travel and ministry. I preached at the Rehabilitation Center for Rebels from the Congo forests and Pastor Roger preached at the Reconciliation Village.

Although the team members had heard me share, back in America, about what God has allowed me to see Him do in Rwanda, they admit they were skeptical but no longer. As we watch the Holy Spirit empower us for each scheduled and unscheduled ministry opportunity, I find I am no longer the only one crying as we see the impact of His love on these beautiful people, forgotten by most of the world but not by God.

Imagine if you will, being the first white people to visit a village, where a car has never been seen before. And yet they cleared miles of "road" so we could visit them. 100's were there and they are awaiting our second visit on the 11th to share the Gospel for a second time, inviting others in the surrounding mountains to attend. We were given the gift of seeing them preform some tribal dancing...it was beautiful, and you might be surprised to know just who did some dancing with them. Jon and Pastor Roger will accompany the women's team on the 11th.

Pastor Roger and Jon have had a tremendous time doing the first 3 day Prison Pastor Training Program at Rilima Prison and the pastors at the 1930 Prison where I preached yesterday are eagerly awaiting our return so they can start on Monday.

Tomorrow I preach at the prison here and in the afternoon Tanya, Pastor Dorothea and I will do ministry with an HIV/Aids group from Bishop John Rucyahana's Church. Bishop John spoke at Mission Connexion Northwest earlier this year. I have been invited to preach at his church on Sunday before returning to Kigali later in the day.

I am so very thankful for each member of this team, Men and women who love God deeply and allow God to stretch them. Truly, each member of this team has seen God work in such a wonderful way that none of us will ever be the same.

The Team and our airport welcoming committee.

Dear Ministry Partners,

Last night was the first official IRM Ministry Team dinner. IRM hosted the U.S. IRM Team and the Rwandan IRM Team that will be working together. Pastors from the Foursquare Church, Chaplins from Prison Fellowship, men and women interpreters, 19 in all.

I shared my appreciation for each one and my heart for the ministry God has led IRM to do here. As we minister together I know we will become fast friends.

Today was our first day of ministry, we went to Rilima Prison.

At first light we saw the enemy try and derail our plans. We were to leave at 9 to go to the prison and it was discovered that today was "Clean-up Rwanda" day. On one Sat. a month Rwandans are required to do clean-up around their homes and town until noon. If you are caught traveling or doing anything else - you will be arrested and taken to jail. Roadblocks are everywhere and the only other thing you can do is stay inside your house.

Alfred, the IRM Operations Supervisor, who was in Kenya for work was to arrive at 9 a.m. today but because of a strike by Kenya Air, all of their flights were delayed.

The enemy has been attacking heavily but God's control and provision and blessing has been evident as Alfred was able to procure a seat on another airline, to arrive at 12:30 but when he was delayed at the Kigali Airport the day was getting so late that I made the decision to go with those present and have Blessing interpret for me as she had done on a previous trip.

As we drove out of town Blessings phone rang, Alfred was just a couple of minutes behind us, asking us to wait for him to catch up.

I am not sure, but I think I have set a record today, every time the enemy attacked to get us focused on the circumstances I found myself saying...."Jesus I give you praise for who you are and that you ARE the one in control here. I give you praise because I KNOW that we are going to see you do GREAT things today. I give you praise, I give you praise, I give you praise...........".

And for a fact, we did see him do great things. From finding great favor with a Deputy Warden, I had met on a previous trip who asked to pray for and with all of us, (this was a first !!) before entering the prison to seeing God add to the Lamb's Book of life.....3,000!!!!!
I cannot keep back the tears, even now, as I "Thank" God for allowing us to see the Holy Spirit at work.

It is 11p.m. and the team has long since retired so I best be off to bed.

So, as I said we are seeing God's care, provision and blessing in a HUGE way.

PDX Portland today, Rwanda tomorrow.......

Ministry Partners,

We have arrived safe and sound with only a small change in our flight plan. Due to the strike of the airline employees in France we need to stay out of their air space, we had a change in our flight plan adding about 45 min. to our Belgium to Kigali flight. Imagine my delight and surprise at meeting a friend, Joyce Pepos, a former teammate, and her husband in the Belgium airport.

God has been gracious to us in our “seating”, giving me a bulkhead seat so I could elevate my legs but on the last leg from Belgium He provided 2 additional seats next to me so Tanya and I both shared and were both able to lay flat across them and sleep or rest for a couple hours so my hip is almost pain free. Team leader, Roger, had 4 seats so he also got to lay flat to sleep.

I am so thankful for God’s hand on my health as I traveled. I have had absolutely no pain on the right side of my head. Thank you for those of you who were praying concerning the issues I had been having with that.

We arrived at Kigali Airport about 8pm and all of our luggage arrived with no problems going through customs. We were welcomed by Blessing Mupenzi (Alfred, the IRM supervisor is in Kenya until Sat.morning), Pastor Peter, the translator for the prison pastors training and Alex, a friend of Alfred’s.

I cannot tell you how happy we all were to see their smiling faces.

So, as you can see we have much to praise Jesus for already.

Our rooms at Moucecore Center were ready for us and we are looking forward to a good nights sleep tonight.

May 26 has finally arrived......Rwanda, here we come...

Tomorrow the 2010 IRM Team Rwanda meets at PDX at 5:30am for the beginning of our eagerly anticipated trip.

So many plans, so many decisions, so very many suitcases filled with your donated supplies.

Every team member is as excited as I am to see what God will do on this trip.

Our Team Leader has booked an excellent travel route and the shortest, I might add, that I have ever been on. Portland, New York, Belgium, Kigali (Rwanda). And no 5 ,7 or 12 hour layovers - YEA!!

The 1,000's of Bibles and Discipleship Booklets you so graciously donated funds for are waiting for distribution upon our arrival.

Lord,

Thank you for being a God who goes before us and lives within us.

That means whatever we may face we have nothing to fear

and everything to hope for in you.

Victoria has such a huge passion for helping IRM put God's written Word into the hands of the Rwandan people. Sometimes it is a family effort for Victoria as her sister, Elizabeth, also helps.

I can only offer "Praise" to God for the many wonderful answers to prayer and blessings God is showering upon IRM's efforts to serve the precious people of Rwanda for this 2010 trip.

What an amazing thing that God would allow us to see Him do such great things in Rwanda. Already for this trip, we have seen God speak into the hearts of the government officials that IRM would find favor with them and we would be allowed to implement the Pastors Training Program and Women's Conference for the prisoners. I am so very thankful for the government officials and wardens who have been so gracious and kind toward our efforts.

Although the economy here is not very good, people have heard me speak about the wonderful people of Rwanda and they have seen pictures of the prisoners and villagers with such joy and celebration at having been given a Bible. Because the Holy Spirit has touched the hearts of my ministry partners, you have provided the funds for 1,000's of Bibles and Discipleship Booklets for us to distribute on this trip.

Rwanda, 12 days and counting........

The days are passing so quickly as I work on final preparations for the trip.

The beauty of the country is dwarfed by the beauty of the people.

This will be my 7 trip to Rwanda and I am no longer surprised by the broad smiles midst such a sea of poverty. They have been through so much and have so little. Yet as one orphan, who knows Jesus as his Savior, responded to my question about his constant smile "I refuse to allow satan to steal from me what God has put in my heart".
Such wisdom from that man !!!

Although this first IRM Team is small, God has knit together such a powerful group of men and women, all willing to allow the Holy Spirit to stretch and equip them. It makes me smile as I hear questions followed by "I've never done this before" because I am saying....
the same thing.
The logistics of taking my own team are really something and I am thankful for all the IRM team partners that contribute to accomplishing every detail.
What a pleasure to have a team where everyone is willing to share unfamiliar responsibilities, serving each other while we serve the people of Rwanda.

I am so thankful for God's design and direction in ALL of this. I stand in awe of everything He is doing with IRM and in my life.
I am continually giving HIM praise.

Not only are we busy preparing to go but our Rwandan team is busy preparing for our arrival. The Core Team had their final preparation meeting yesterday. Almost daily I internet chat with Alfred, the IRM Operations Supervisor, about all he is doing on his side of the ocean, to ready things for this first IRM team ministry trip.

Flights had to be rerouted north over Greenland or south over Spain to avoid the 1,200-miles (2,000-kilometer)-long cloud stretching from Iceland to northern Spain, Eurocontrol said. This will increase flying times by about an hour in either direction.

"We assume that basically most of the trans-Atlantic flights will have to be rerouted on Saturday," Eurocontrol spokeswoman Kyla Evans said. "We expect substantial delays because of that."

Approximately 600 airliners make the oceanic crossing every day. Around 40 percent will be rerouted southward and the rest will skirt Iceland from the north.

Preparations continue....

Today I returned from Southern Oregon where my family celebrated our Mother's 85th birthday.

While there, I met with the Team that is accompanying me to Rwanda and handed off pieces of luggage filled with supplies you have so generously donated. Scarves, ties and re-usable purchased and hand made shopping bags. It is an exciting thing to see women use their sewing talent to bless other women, half way around the world. One group from Klamath Falls made and hemmed over 140 cotton scarves and women from New Life Church in Canby made and decorated more that 40 beautiful shopping bags.

The women who receive these tangible gifts of Gods love will be blessed.

As the days become filled with so many things that must be done in preparation for our departure I am reminded of the following poem and verse.

I received the answer to our prayers a few moments ago.
This time God has chosen to answer our prayers with a ...."YES".
We applied for a total of 16 Prison Ministry days (twice as many as last year) in 7 different prisons and the government approved 20 days for the entire team. They also approved one visit to Butari Prison, that will be a new one to me.
I am excited to see what new opportunities God will provide for the additional days that are now open for the women team members.

"We give you thanks and praise dear God for answering our prayers in such a wonderful way. Thank you for allowing us to find favor with the government officials in Rwanda. Please, give us direction as we continue to prepare for the ministry you have laid before us to do and continue to prepare the hearts of those we will have opportunity to minister to.

Alfred Mupenzi, the IRM Operations Supervisor in Rwanda, has notified me that Prison Fellowship Rwanda has just submitted our request to do Prison Ministry to the Rwandan government. The request is to do general preaching and implement two new programs, the "Pilot Program" for training prisoners who are pastors and the Women's Day Conferences for women prisoners.

Busy days.......

Although this photo reminds me of the work involved in preparing the Kinyarwanda Bibles for distribution, every day here is filled with tasks in preparation for the first IRM led ministry team trip to Rwanda.

Administration duties have now been added to my schedule as IRM's role in Rwanda is expanding.
I am so thankful for all the individuals, gifted in their own area of expertise, that God has brought along side to help. "Team" does not just refer to the groups that will now be accompanying me to Rwanda but to those who so faithfully support me here with their talents.

Two women's sewing groups have stepped up to use their talents to bless the women of Rwanda. The group from Klamath Falls made beautiful scarves and the group from New Life Foursquare church made colorful and sturdy shopping bags. All tangible gifts of God's love.

Norma, my neighbor, has accompanied me to speaking engagements and helped with typing and the packaging of scarves, ties and now the shopping bags that have been so graciously donated by ministry partners. Disposable plastic bags are illegal in Rwanda so purchased or handmade shopping bags are a very useful gift.
My living room and dining room have many suitcases filled with these and other supplies.

My excitement grows as the trip days approach and as I speak with the teammates the excitement in their voices is evident as well.

Hopefully, with God's leading, this is the first of many teams IRM will provide ministry outreach for. Our trip departure date of May 26 will be here before we know it

Your prayers were answered.......

My trip to Southern Oregon went very well and the Lord's hand was with me as I traveled safely over snow covered roads.
It was a wonderful time meeting with those who will be going with me on the May/June trip.
How exciting to see God speak into the hearts of these brothers and sisters in Christ as they desire to serve others half way around the world, most being obedient in going on this, their first mission trip. These ambassadors for Christ are beginning a new adventure.
Visiting Malin Baptist Church is like being with family. Pastor Hagerty allowed me to have the entire morning service so I was able to share about how God called me to prison ministry in Rwanda, an interesting journey for sure.
I started one day sharing with a women's Bible Study and the rest of that day with a women's sewing group that makes quilts for other women with cancer. They took time out from quilting to make over 150 scarves for the poor women of Rwanda.
I drove home today with a thankful heart for God's goodness in giving me former friends and new friends who bless my life.

Traveling Again....

On Wednesday I will once again be traveling to the Klamath Basin in Southern Oregon. As I prepare to go I am working on a new Power Point Presentation that will help me share the story of how God directed my steps to doing ministry in the prisons of Rwanda.

We Begin Again.......

I am so pleased to tell you that I have started working on plans for the next trip to Rwanda that will begin the last week of May. This trip will be somewhat different but especially exciting as it appears I will see God implement the program he gave me a vision for a number of years ago.
The prisons are communities themselves and many of the ministries needed in the village communities are also needed in the prisons. Ministries like Pastors Training, Womens Conferences, Childrens Ministry (up to age 5), Youth Ministry, Sports, Medical and the list goes on.........
A former Pastor and his wife have made a long term commitment to IRM and to the ministry IRM is doing in Rwanda. On this trip he will begin the teachings for the "Prison Pastors Training Pilot Program", a training program for pastors who are currently prisoners themselves. The prison pastors have asked for training and this is so very important when you know that only 1 to 2% of pastors in Rwanda have had the opportunity for any formal biblical training. Being grounded in the "Gospel" and the fundamentals of "Faith" will allow them to be more productive shepherds while in prison and outside, if and when they are released.
I would appreciate your prayers for this effort...that the Holy Spirit would give us wisdom concerning what teachings to cover in this "Pilot Program" and for the hearts of the pastors to be open and receptive to the content. Currently, the plan is to start this program in three of the prisons IRM has previously done ministry in.

Giving Thanks

"Thank You" to the gracious pastors who allowed me to share in their churches and for your prayers while I traveled safely to and in the Klamath Falls, Oregon area. I am so very thankful for partners who pray and support me and the ministry of IRM.

For me, Thanks-giving is not a day but a frame of mind. I am especially reminded of God's goodness in my everyday events and as I see the photos of the recent trip to Rwanda where the faithfulness of God was so evident every day.

In America I get caught up in the pace of daily affairs but in the slower pace of Rwanda the way God orchestrates each day is more obvious. It is a thrilling thing to see Him provide opportunities that stretch and use me, all the while equipping me to do tasks I am untrained to do. At one point in the trip I told God that I needed new words for which to praise Him for what I was seeing Him do. Words like awesome, great, mighty, majestic and spectacular just cannot express what I felt in my heart as I witnessed God work.

The "Core Team", that IRM established in Rwanda on the last trip, had their first meeting this last week in preparation for the 2010 trip. The team is made up of Pastor Deo - Prison Fellowship, Pastor Roger - Foursquare Missionary, Pastor Peter, Pastor Isaiah and Alfred - IRM Operations Supervisor, I am also on the team but function from America. All of us have a unified vision for future ministry within the prisons of Rwanda. They currently are working on a Training Manual for pastors who find themselves in prison.

The main focus of IRM will remain the same - Evangelism and providing Bibles but training these pastors is so very important, teaching them to evangelize and to encourage the other christian prisoners in their walk with Jesus. I feel that teaching them how to be fishers of men is a very good goal for IRM.

I will be speaking at my home church for all three services this weekend and I have one presentation next Friday. If you are interested in having me speak or do a presentation for your church or organization please contact me.

I am continuing to collect much needed scarves and ties for the 2010 trip.

May I ask for your consideration - If you have a person that you need a Christmas gift for and you are unsure what to buy for them or they already have "everything", please consider buying Bibles in their name for the people of Rwanda. It would be a meaningful gift that would help our brothers and sisters in Christ grow in their Christian walk.

Reminders of a very busy schedule......

Ministry Partners,

As I work on putting together a new Power Point Presentation I find it lots of fun as I enter photos and remember the events of that day.

On the day I spoke at the Rehabilitation Center for rebels from the Congo forests in Northern Rwanda I was still struggling with a very sore throat. Alfred's voice stayed strong and powerful as he interpreted for me and for many speakers from the Norwegian Church League who were without a translator. They had contributed to the building of homes at the Reconciliation Village and with the water projects there.

It appears we were more tired than we realized as David documented this without our knowledge.......

A very amusing sight when you know that the 25 mile trip back to Kigali took +2 & 1/2 hours due to the numerous and very large potholes. "Thank You" to our excellent driver, Gregory, from Prison Fellowship.
We must have been very tired, indeed !!!!

Next month the IRM 5 member Rwanda "Core Team" will began monthly meetings to discuss training materials for the prison pastors and other plans for the 2010 trip. The team is comprised of:

Did you notice the red squeeze bottle of American ketchup. It was nice to have a familiar taste from home for our "chips". Rwandan ketchup is served in most restaurants and is similar to jelled red water.

Arriving home.....

Dear Ministry Partners,

We arrived safe and sound in Portland on Thursday after a very long +10 hour flight from Amsterdam. Greeting us at the airport were David's friend Suzanne and a number of additional friends from our Singles group.

Today, Sunday, David and I briefly shared some personal insights and observations of the trip with our Singles group.

As I work through jet-lag and unpack some of the gifts I received from "family" friends and ministry partners, each one reminds me of the powerful days of ministry and how very blessed I am. I offer "Praise" for each reminder of God's goodness and faithfulness.

Flight Day....

Ministry Partners,

Today is flight day for our return to Portland.

We left Kigali on time and with a special blessing from the Lord. David was over weight on both his bags by quite an amount but was not charged and the amount could have been substantial. When the ticket agent asked to weigh his carry on he was over some and her answer to that situation was for him to take some things out and distribute them in my carry on and Emmanuels. It makes one smile as we are all traveling on the same plane and the total weight remains the same. Regardless, we are thankful that no extra charges were incurred.

It was a special unexpected treat to have Pastor Deo and his wife accompany us to the airport along with Blessing, wife of Alfred Mupenzi, the IRM Operations Supervisor. By the time we left for the airport, Alfred was already in Uganda for personal business.

Every trip it gets harder to leave the wonderful "family" friends and ministry partners that God has blessed me with here. As the ministry grows so does the support team for me, personally, and for IRM. It is exciting to see God providing this expanding support base both in America and in Rwanda. I am so very thankful.

We are currently in Nairobi, Kenya, and we have a +5hr. layover before leaving for Amsterdam. Other than a very warm unconditioned airport, we are well but I am beginning to "feel" the effects of the very busy, wonderful three weeks of ministry.

We will arrive in Portland tomorrow and we will see you soon.

Following is an article that appeared in " The New Times", a paper that is distributed in Rwanda.

MUSANZE - An American evangelist, Arlene Tatum, has implored prisoners convicted of different crimes in the country to seek reconciliation with God and those they wronged in order to have peaceful minds.

Tatum, who is the founder of International Reconciliation Ministries (IRM), is traversing different government prisons in the country preaching to inmates in a bid to encourage the rehabilitation process.

“Today is the time to start making good choices despite the bad choices you made in the past,” Tatum told inmates at Ruhengeri Prison recently, as thousands of prisoners declared their dedication to God.

In her testimony Tatum, 65, who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her skull, recounts her journey from bitterness to freedom, arguing that people should not be held back by their past -but live by the choices they make at the moment.

Referring to the Bible, Tatum said God reconciled people to himself through Jesus Christ.

“All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends and gave us the task of making others his friends too,” she said.

At Rilima Prison, in Bugesera, some inmates confessed their crimes and expressed remorse.

Today, we had a beautiful buffet lunch with Pastor Deo and the Prison Fellowship staff, who cooked it for us. I was brought to tears by their kind words as they each shared how they felt about the time they spent doing ministry with us. Then they presented us with authentic Rwandan wear, a shirt for David and a dress for me.

Tomorrow, a meeting is scheduled with Pastor Deo and the Foursquare Missionary and pastors from his church.

It is hard to believe that the day after tomorrow we leave for Portland.

My sore throat is all well and my broken toe is getting better.

Our Final Days

Dear Ministry Partners,
It's sad to know that we are in the final days of our time here.
So many wonderful things have happened and we have been blessed to see God touch the lives of so many. The last few days we have been accompanied by Gregory, our young driver, and Clair both from Prison Fellowship.
Tonight, I hosted a "Thank You" dinner for Alfred & Blessing and Pastor Deo & his wife. David was a bit under the weather and decided to stay at the Guest House.
Tomorrow we will go with Pastor Deo and Alfred for our last prison visit as I will be speaking to the prisoners at the 1930 Prison. I will once again talk about making good choices and taking responsibility for our past wrongs. The Rwandans tell me it is unheard of that prisoners would confess that they did murder in the genocide or steal in front of 1,000's of other onlooking prisoners, guards and their warden. Only the Holy Spirit can bring that kind of conviction and give that kind of courage.
How we praise you God for all you have allowed us to witness you do.
Both my throat and broken toe are getting better.
Monday and Tuesday I will be meeting with Pastor Deo, his staff and
Board of Directors. The Foursquare Missionary and his pastors will also
join us.
These are exciting and fruitful times for me and the ministry.

God still reigns

Greetings from Kigali.

It is such a privilege to be here and watch God work. The Holy Spirit is bringing many to salvation decisions along with public confessions of buried secret sins. It is an exciting thing to watch them making good decisions that will change their lives forever. Indeed, I serve a wonderful Savior.

The enemy continues to try and disrupt things and refuses to admit that he is defeated. His attacks are evidence that God is going to allow us to once again see Him do something wonderful for which we can offer thanks and praise.

It seems I have picked up a bug as I am struggling with a very sore throat with swallowing and speaking being difficult. Please pray that God would bring healing as I still have much speaking to do. Today, I speak for the morning service at Vivante Church and later I will be meeting with a pastor from the Foursquare church here.

A few days ago I met the Foursquare missionaries and they invited David, Alfred, Blessing and I to have dinner at their home that evening and we had a wonderful time of fellowship. They are very excited about working with Prison Fellowship and IRM to bring training to the prison pastors and develop a discipleship program for the prisoners.

My love for the people of Rwanda and their beautiful country continues to grow.

As each day passes we see the hand of God as He covers us and opens doors and roadblocks that the enemy himself has set that we might become discouraged. In there place we find ourselves showered by God's love, provision, encouragement and blessings. The Holy Spirit is bringing many to salvation.

PLEASE continue to hold us up in prayer.

Just think.....in a few days I will leave America for my second home....Rwanda, it will be my 7th trip and many of the people there are like family for me. I am excited to see them all again especially the women at Pastor Deo's Center.

It's so very hard to believe that these beautiful friends are dying of HIV/AIDS !!!
